Platform

If it only exists in someone’s console, it does not exist

Servers, clusters and pipelines described in files you own.

The problem

Releases wait for the one person who knows the manual steps. Half the fleet was configured by hand in 2021 and nobody is certain which half. Someone adopted Kubernetes because it was the obvious answer and now there is a control plane no one fully understands. The build takes forty minutes and most of that is downloading things it already had.

The approach

I put the whole thing in version control and right-size it, on Hetzner, AWS or your own hardware. Your servers stay in the state your code describes. Any host can be rebuilt from nothing. Your whole team can read the pipelines. Clusters match your real load, and sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need one.

What you get

  • Fleet configuration in Puppet or Ansible, converging and idempotent
  • Provisioning in OpenTofu with remote state and locking that works
  • Pipelines committed to your repo — no external config UI, no hidden steps
  • Cluster topology documented with the reasoning, not just the result
  • A rehearsed upgrade and rollback procedure, run once with your team watching
  • Honest advice when the orchestration you are asking for is the wrong tool

Example

infra/network.tf

terraform {
  required_version = "~> 1.10"

  # State in an account you control, with locking.
  backend "s3" {
    bucket       = "acme-tfstate"
    key          = "prod/network.tfstate"
    region       = "eu-north-1"
    use_lockfile = true
    encrypt      = true
  }
}

module "vpc" {
  source = "./modules/vpc"

  cidr               = "10.20.0.0/16"
  availability_zones = ["eu-north-1a", "eu-north-1b"]
  single_nat_gateway = false # one per AZ; a NAT outage is not an outage

  tags = {
    environment = "prod"
    managed_by  = "opentofu"
    owner       = "platform"
  }
}

A short description is enough. Within one business day I will tell you what I think the problem is, roughly how long it takes, and whether you need me at all. Sometimes the honest answer is no.
